At the end of the Ancien Régime, the bookshop advertisements published in the press (without being the only medium) in accordance with the editorial policy drawn up by the publicists played a not inconsiderable role in the dissemination of the first vector for the propagation of the Enlightenment: books. The Semanario de Mallorca formed part of this enlightened press that decided to unveil Spain's bibliographical heritage. This article explores the readings proposed to the Mallorcans, focusing on the works in Spanish and in foreign languages, the authors and translators as well as their social status, the places where the printed matter was sold, the sales strategies to seduce the widest possible public and, obviously, the dissemination of the Enlightenment in the Kingdom of Mallorca.

Libertinism, Inquisition and the Case against Cristóbal de Cañaveral

The meaning in Spain of the word «libertinism» evolved significantly in the course of the 18th century. Previously it had distinguished unorthodox thinking in religious and philosophical contexts, but in the late 17th and early 18th century in France and England it characterized a freedom from sexual restraints dictated by religious institutions. The Spanish Academy dictionary did not register the word until 1803, content to describe it as a disregard in language and behaviour for the prevailing orthodoxy, without specifying the sexual. However, the word appeared in religious books and documents with what seemed a sexual meaning. After 1779 the Inquisition pursued the case of Cristóbal de Cañaveral for sexual offences, both the possession and reading of erotic materials and for proclaiming his disdain for obedience to sexual orthodoxy, in which the summary account of the proceedings against him constantly use the words «libertine» and «libertinism» to characterize his sexual behaviour and beliefs.

Pedro Manuel Cedillo y Rujaque and His Contributions to Spanish Nautic Education of the 18th Century

The navigation books of the 18th century have been widely studied with different perspectives and methodologies, from those that seek to know the training received by pilots and midshipmen, to those that investigate their contents and relationship with the science of the moment, to those that only They analyze specific content. The absence of a monographic study on the figure of Cedillo and his contribution to Nautical Education is what has motivated this research. To carry it out we have analyzed his Cosmographic work and the references they contain in the body of the text. The results obtained allow us to conclude that Cedillo's contribution to Nautical Education lies in the scientific evolution of his texts that he knew how to adapt them to the science of the moment and to the training programs for pilots and midshipmen.

Among the few theatrical texts from the Canary Islands prior to the 19th century, La Candelaria entre guanchez and Edipo atlántico has not received critical attention despite representing an extraordinary example of the interest in the islands’ past among the early Enlightenment thinkers. Lacking a specific place and date of printing, the anonymous author crafts an elaborate celebration of the birth of Louis I in 1707. Drawing upon the limited local historiography available at that time and relying on classical and literary sources, the author proposes a providential and novel interpretation of the conquest, which would culminate with the ascension of the new Bourbon dynasty to the throne. This paper describes and analyses the two devices the author employs in his theatrical recreation for an elite insular audience: the mythical roots of the archipelago (Canary Islands as a remnant of the devastated Atlantis) and its incorporation into Christendom (the appearance of the Virgin of Candelaria). This intertwining of the pagan and the Christian must be understood in the context of the ecclesiastical regalism that characterised the initial phase of the pre-Enlightenment period in the Canary Islands.

The vejamen presented at the Academia del Buen Gusto in Madrid by José Antonio Porcel under the title Juicio lunático (session of 1 October 1750) has not gone unnoticed by many critics who have tried to study the importance of the respective Academias del Trípode and del Buen Gusto in the establishment of the neoclassical ideology in our country. However, this text has never been analyzed in its entirety, but scattered fragments have been reused according to the different themes it deals with and the interests that researchers could exploit in these matters. This article presents an exegesis of the Juicio lunático from a total perspective of the literary and scholarly ideas set out in it and stands as a solid basis from which to undertake the critical edition of the text, which, although not unpublished, lacks critical treatment.

Sin, repentance and death of María Antonia Fernández Valleo, «La Caramba» (1751-1787). On readings and appropriations of the myth of the holy harlot in the chapbooks

This article examines three chapbooks published in 1787 concerning the process of sin, conversion and death of the actriz-tonadillera María Antonia Fernández Vallejo, also known as La Caramba. First, a review of the representations of the holy harlot in 18th century chapbooks will be carried out. Secondly, we will attempt to demonstrate that the printed works examined adapt the codes of devotional literature with the aim of telling the story of a fallen woman, inserting this framework in a specific and human dimension. Finally, with regard to Roger Chartier's concept of appropriation, it will be explained how, in the Enlightenment, these stories admit a multiplicity of ways of readings which broaden the counter-reformationist approach, the embodiment of which in literature would be completed in the 19th century

Booksellers' and printers' catalogues are a valuable source for studying their commercial networks and sales strategies. Among their wide variety of typologies, some of them were used to advertise collections of chapbooks printed by specialised workshops. The study of these catalogues offers the opportunity to approach the processes of production and circulation of the «pliegos de cordel», as well as the editorial dynamics that shaped this corpus of popular printed literature decade after decade. This work proposes a comparative analysis of three of these catalogues, published in Valencia by Agustín Laborda, and in Cordoba by Luis de Ramos and Rafael García, in a chronological arc between the 1770s and the 1820s

Censored sexualities: Edition and Study of a New Satirical Poem by Iglesias de la Casa

In this article we present an unpublished poem by the eighteenth-century poet José Iglesias de la Casa: «Guarda, Pablo». It is a satirical poem with a rich potential for sexual suggestions about an everyday and symbolic space, a fountain, where an unbridled reality of sexual encounters between girls and boys takes place. The warning message that dominates the poem, concerning this prevalent practice, combines hygienic and moral aspects. Content clues are also suggested that reveal a homoerotic poetic expression. The difficulty of fixing meanings in it, due to its figurative and sometimes obscure language, enhances its richness of readings, which it invites.

Reading as a woman in the Transition from the Eighteenth to the Nineteenth Century: Theories and Treatises on Women’s Reading in Spain and Europe

This paper explores the reading practices of eighteenth-century women and the theories and treatises on women’s reading that came to light in the transition between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Starting from the consideration that the debate on the intellectual capacity of women took place with the arrival of the Enlightenment throughout Europe, the article delves into the terms in which this debate took place in the Spanish sphere through the study of the treatises by Juan Francisco Masdéu and Vicente del Seixo. In this respect, it questions the logics of validation of women’s access to literate culture and reflects on the effects that this theorisation had on women writers and readers of the period.

This article aims to offer a diachronic reflection on Mexican bibliography, showing the interesting changes it underwent, first between the Creole plenitude of Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren and his Bibliotheca mexicana (1755) and the positions taken in favor of the Hispanic monarchy in Mexico in the phase of insurgency (Beristáin, Biblioteca hispano americana septentrional, 1816) and, later, in the positivist approach to the colonial bibliography during the long presidency of Porfirio Díaz (García Icazbalceta, Bibliografía mexicana del siglo xvi, 1886; Vicente de P. Andrade, Ensayo bibliográfico mexicano del siglo xvii, 1899 and Nicolás León, Bibliografía mexicana del siglo xviii, 1902-1908). The purpose of this overview is to show how a transversal reading of the rich and varied information provided by the repertoires makes it possible to reconstruct the successive approaches to written culture and thus to reconstruct their scope for the history not only of books and publishing, but also of culture in general.
