Abstract
Treatment of disability by the printing press in Asturias.- In this research, introductory considerations are exposed, in which the relevance of public attitudes toward disability is defined; this is a wide field of research and application divided in several topics: relevance of attitudes in rehabilitación; origin, maintenance, and change of attitudes; role of the several social agents in the creation and change of these attitudes, with special consideration given to the role played by the mass media. The methodology and results of a research about treatment of the disability by the printing press in Asturias are also exposed. The conclusions refer to an ambivalent treatment: related to specific issues, advertisements, and some celebrities and associations, proper and non marginal image is obtained; in this way, the printing mass media in Asturias are clearly different from the ones in other cultural and geographical contexts. However, related to non specific issues, coincidence with the results of different researches and reports is observed: maintenance of negative attitudes toward disability.
