Abstract

Analogical representations in perception and memory: Images, mental transformations and structural representations. The idea of the propositional theories, aiming to prove the existence of an universal language of thought is not adequate. After considering arguments in favor and against, the existence of an analogical representational system, different from the propositional system, is proposed. The revision of recent experimental results in problem solving, perception and memory leads to support the idea that a presemantic structural representational system, invariant over size and reflection, mediates the observed visual priming. The main function of this system is to represent the global structure of visual objects. Ongoing research is directed towards the study of the characteristics of the haptic representational system and the relationships between vision and touch.
