Abstract
Specifity vs. generality of autonomic responses in emotion. Starting from some introductory considerations, this paper reviews the main studies about specifity of ANS responses in emotion since the origins of James-Cannon controversy, although the experiments subsequent to 1973 are emphasized. Once analyzed the results of these investigations, it is concluded that available data are contradictory, for which reason we think experimental evidence does not clearly support the assumption of autonomic specifity. Finally, we point out some possible explanations for those results and some questions concerning future investigation.
