Abstract

Psychosocial correlates of academic failure in "Bachillerato and Formación Profesional students". Psychosocial variables seem to be the best predictors of academic failure. Assuming this general idea, we analyse in this work the relationship between academic failure and aspiration level, mental abilities and social class, in two high school samples, Bachillerato (N = 322) and Formación Profesional (N=153) students. The hypotesis we have establised were confirm by our results; academic failure is related in both samples with social class, educational aspiration level and some specific mental abilities. Moreover, it is established a superior academic performance, mental abilities and level of aspiration of Bachillerato students over Formación Profesional students. Their social class is also superior. All of that show us an strong social selection in the preview admittance to this type of education. In our opinion, this thing makes very difficult all the steps for resolving the F.P. problems in our country in a short or medium term.
