Abstract
Formulations about the functional significance of orienting response. This paper develops a detailed analysis of several theories on the nature of the orienting response. First, the historical evolution of the concept is briefly considered, and Sokolov's pioneering model is shown ; then, the report critically exposes the theoretical interpretation and the functional significance given to the OR from the point of view of attention and emotion theories. In both cases, the author puts the emphasis on Öhman's models and research, because of their integrative nature and their wide influence in this field. Finally, the paper considers critical perspectives of the OR concept, with a special mention of Barry's preliminary process theory.
