Abstract

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A new technique to study the cerebral basis of cognitive processes. Functional neuroimaging allows the visualization of discrete cerebral areas which are activated during the performance of cognitive tasks or mental operations. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRl) is a new technique that offers evident advantages over the previous ones, such as the positron emission tomography (PET). Functional magnetic resonance imaging has greater spatial and temporal resolution than other neuroimaging techniques and is a noninvasive procedure. Hence, it can be considered the most suitable technique for the cerebral physiological research of the cognitive functions.
