Abstract

Reading Span Test. This paper proposes a Spanish version of the Daneman and Carpenter's (1980), Reading Span Test (RST) in order to use it in a standardized way by the Spanish researchers. As WM is involved in that comprehension, RST reflects the trade-off between its processing (reading a series of sentences) and storage functions (the recall of the final word of each sentence). This is the main difference between this task and the classical span measures which would explain the capacity of this measure to predict a text comprehension skill opposite to a Word Span Test (WST) in comprehension processes. Results with both tests are presented. Furthermore, the correlations between RST and WST with three comprehension measures (reading time, macrostructure construction tasks that implied several macrorules and a free recall task) were analized. These results suggested that RST is a valid measure of WM in text comprehension.
