Abstract

Influence of the alexithymia level in the emotional stimuli processing in a Stroop colour-naming task. In this article, we research the emotion processing capacities related to alexithymia, for assessing that alexithymia reflects a deficit in the ability to process cognitively emotional stimuli. We performed a computerized Stroop color-naming task in which they named the colors of arousal words (e.g., AIDS) and non emotional words (e.g., GLASSES). In agreement with predictions, in the experimental phase subjects categorized as alexithymics should take less time to colour-name arousal words than non-alexithymics. These findings suggest that alexithymics were less able to recognise emotional stimuli. Also these finding provide further support for the validity of alexithymia construct.
