Abstract

The role of the syllable in the perception of spanish. This study examines the nature of syllabic congruency effect: The detection of speech sounds in words is facilitated when they coincide with a syllable of the word. This effect has been viewed as pre-lexical but there are some recent results that go against this interpretation. In Spanish the syllabic effect seems to appear with long reaction times but not with faster reaction times. Using words and pseudowords and ERP recording in a syllable monitoring task, we found the syllabic congruency effect in reaction times and in the P3 component latency for words but not for pseudowords. Moreover, we find this effect lateralized in the left hemisphere of the brain. Consequently, our results suggest that syllabic congruency effect could be produced in a post-lexical level of processing.
