Abstract

Evaluation of "Philosophy for Children": a program of learning thinking skills. Philosophy for Children (P4C) is a program developed originally by Mathew Lipman. P4C tries to improve several thinking skills as well as the students' critical and creative thinking. Their conative traits are also addressed. Lipman's perspective is philosophical and his theoretical basis can be found in Peirce, Mead and Dewey. The present study evaluates the impact of P4C in three colleges at the Comunidad de Madrid . The pattern of changes in several cognitive and conative variables were analysed following the application of the program to experimental and control groups over a whole school year. The results suggests an improvement of the experimental group in general cognitive ability, but neither in specific cognitive abilities nor in personality.
