Abstract

Two Different Ways To Present the Results in the Functional Analysis Of Problem Behaviour. The functional analysis of problem behaviour shown by three people with mental retardation living in an institution has been completed, following the experimental method described by Iwata et al. (1992). The results for each of the subjects are presented in two distinct forms: a) at length, being the designed ha bitual formula; described in total frequency per situation, and b) briefly, where the results of only six sessions are presented, using a "minute by minute graphic intrasession," that is to say, the minute by minute frequency of each session. All in all, and following a study by Vollmer et al. (1993), we hope to observe whether, through the comparison of both results, we are able to reach the same conclusions concerning the function of problem behaviour. The results of the present study allow us to state that in as far as the brief presentation is concerned, the same general conclusions can be drawn as in the presentation made at length. One logical and rather useful consequence being the possibility of carrying out a functional analysis design which is inexpensive in relation to the number of sessions carried out (the presentation of brief results), and which enables us to reach similar conclusions to those reached through a more lengthy design (the presentation of results obtained at length).
