Abstract

Emotional intensity and its relationship with extraversion and neuroticism. There are several models for the relationship between emotional intensity and the temperament variables of extraversion and neuroticism. This paper investigated the relationship between these models and extraversion and neuroticism using the Emotional Intensity Scale (EIS) developed by Bachor owski and Braaten (1994) to make available a measure of emotional intensity that is independent of frequency, and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R). Analyses revealed psychometric properties similar to those of the original version, and the need to separate negative emotional intensity into an anger component and a nonanger component when examining the relationship between extraversion and negative emotional intensity. Results are consistent (only partially) with the predictions of the Wallace, Bachorowski and Newman model and Gray's model, but are not consistent with the arousal regulation theory or the Larsen and Ketelaar model.
