Abstract

Beliefs, Social Problem Solving and Psychological Correlates. The main goal of this study was to assess the measurement model of a brief version of the IBT (Irrational Beliefs Test, Jones, 1968), and its relation with social problem solving dimensions (SPSI-R, D'Zurilla, Nezu y Maydeu-Olivares, 1998). 583 undergraduate students completed both scales. The results showed a seven-factor structure as an adequate model for the reduced IBT, with the following factors: Demand for Approval, High Self-expectations, Blame Proneness, Emotional Irresponsibility, Dependency, Helplessness for Change, and Perfectionism. A structural model between beliefs and social problem solving was tested, showing statistically significant paths between both cognitive constructs. Finally in order to determine the construct validity of the IBT-R and SPSI-R, their subscales were correlated with personality and psychological adjustment measures.
