Abstract

Within factors involved in the vertical signalling perception: holistic processing vs. analytical. The hypothesis of the global precedence, defended by Navon (1977), proposed the differentiation between two important levels in visual perception: the global or holistic processing vs local or analytical one and, therefore, many investigations have analysed the influence of several stimular variables and their respective interactions. In this line, with the present paper we attempt to generalize the global precedence to daily perceptive situations, specifically, to study the whole effect of some variables in the global precedence, such as the form, the colour, and the stimulus components, applied to vertical signalling -traffic signs perception-. The results have shown an interaction between the factors "Figure of the vertical sign" x "Element of the vertical sign", for the reaction times and for the correct answers proportion, which suggests the use of holistic and analytic strategies in the visual images' recognition.
