Abstract
Efficacious psychological treatments for panic disorder. This work presents a revision of empirically validated psychological treatments for Panic Disorder. It has been carried out according to the criteria established by the American Psychological Association (Task Force on Promotion and Dissemination of Psychological Procedures, 1995) and having into account the subsequent revisions and recommendations (Chambles et al., 1996; 1998; Chambles & Hollon, 1998: Nathan & Gorman, 1998) on the methodological requirements that research studies have to fulfill. Attention is paid both to the results obtained on Axis I (internal validity or efficacy) and Axis II (clinical utility, external validity or effectiveness) of the guidelines developed by the APA (Template for Developing Guidelines: Interventions for Mental Disorders and Psychological Aspects of Physical Disorders). Such guidelines intend to provide practical instructions for conducting psychological interventions. Therefore, the available empirical evidence on this issue is analyzed with the aim of examining the efficacy of any given intervention. The applicability and possibility of the psychological intervention in the specific context that is to be offered is analyzed, as well.
