Abstract

The pseudohomophone effect on word recognition in a shallow language. The pseudohomophone effect has been used to assess phonological recoding during reading: Pseudohomophones are slower recognized than normal pseudowords. In contrast to English languag e, Spanish is a phonologically regular language, so the role of the phonology could be different in both systems. Experiments involving lexical decisions and a reading aloud were run using high and low base-frequency pseudowords and pseudohomophones. The results show a pseudohomophone effect in both experiments, though there is an inhibitory tendency in lexical decision task and a facilitatory tendency in reading aloud task. These findings do not basically differ from those obtained in English languag e and may be explained as a function of the different tasks demands. It is assumed that both experiments require automatic phonolog ical activation of the words, but the response is mediated by orthog raphic and phonological processes in lexical decision and only by phonological processes in reading.
