Abstract

Anchorage in judicial decision making. Though the literature has shown that judges' decision-making is subject to bias (Wrightsman, 1999), no specific study has determined the impact of bias on actual judicial decisions. This study aims to review the actual judgements in order isolate the heuristic anchorage and to assess its role on judicial decisions. The results reveal that 63.6 % of the judgements were driven by anchorage, which directly influenced judgement-making, information processing, establishing casual relationships, and legal reasoning. The results are discussed in terms of recommendations designed to mitigate bias.
