Abstract

Goals perspectives of adolescents in sport context. We examined the construct and predictive validity of the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda, 1989), the Beliefs About Success in Sport Questionnaire (Duda & Nicholls, 1992), and the Sport Satisfaction Instrument (Duda & Nicholls, 1992) using structural equation modeling and correlational analyses. The sample was comprised of 967 Valencian adolescents between 11 and 16 years. Confirmatory factor analyses provided evidence regarding the factorial structure of the instruments. Support for the predictive utility of the questionnaires was also garnered. Results revealed two goal-beliefs factors or personal theories of achievement that were consistent with previous research. Adolescents who were high on the Task Goal-Belief factor reported greater enjoyment of sport and less boredom experienced. Scores on the Ego Goal-Belief factor were positively related to boredom in sport. The implications of these findings in terms of maximising students' investment in the physical domain are discussed.
