Abstract

Exploratory factor analysis and psychometric properties of the believes and attitudes about a hypnosis-client scale. Inadequate attitudes and misconceptions about hypnosis affect responses to hypnotic suggestions. Attitudes influence outcomes of the treatments that include hypnosis. The scale assesses the more common misconceptions, and the negative attitudes derived therefrom. An exploratory factorial analysis (N= 761) has yielded six factors: automaton, help, personal control, interest, magical solution and collaboration. Internal consistency of the subscales is satisfactory. Test-retest coefficients (four weeks; N= 116), need to be improved in some of them, especially magical solution and collaboration. The factor structure matches the wrong basic ideas that are both common and outstanding in the general population. This factor structure suggests that it is worthwhile to perform confirmatory factorial analysis.
