Abstract
The Impact of Domestic Violence on the Health of Abused Women. This study examines the impact of domestic violence on the health of abused women. A sample of 270 women who had been, or were currently being, abused by their partners was compared to a control group of 269 women who had not been abused. The abused women suffered more symptoms of serious depression, anxiety and insomnia, and somatic symptoms than the control group. They felt more insecure, had lower self-esteem and less social support. Additionally, they reported suffering a greater number of illnesses and took more medications. The women who were in the process of separating from their abuser, and those who had most recently been abused, experienced more symptoms of anxiety and depression, had lower self-esteem and felt more insecure than the women who, although they had a history of abuse, had already separated from the abuser and had been able to rebuild their lives.Downloads
