Abstract

Early detection and treatment of adolescents with generalized social phobia. The results of a study conducted in a community setting on adolescents with generalized social phobia (APA, 2000) are presented. Thirty-four of the subjects detected agreed to participate and were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions: treatment group (multicomponent program "Intervention in Adolescents with Social Phobia") and waiting-list control group. The inter-group comparisons show a short and longterm (12 months) effectiveness of the treatment with self-report questionnaires and behavior tests as well as with the measures relating to other constructs (assertiveness, social skills and adjustment). Moreover, both the calculated effect sizes and the number of subjects who no longer fulfilled the criteria for social phobia after treatment (DSM-IV-TR criteria; APA, 2000) support the clinical significance of the effectiveness of the treatment.
