Abstract

Family experience and parental role attribution. This study analyses the functions attributed to parents by a group of school age children and adolescents. It is mainly an attempt to evaluate the influence of personal experience on these attributions of parental roles. We also examine the influence of participant gender and that of age-group. Participants in the study were 100 minors from low cultural and socio-economic levels. The information was collected by means of semi-structured interview and was later codified by a team of independent judges. Results showed that the ideas the minors living in centres have about parental roles were more idealised and less complex, and their ideas about the roles of fathers and mothers were similar. The age-group also influence in the attribution of parental roles, as, to a lesser extent, does the gender of the participants.
