Abstract

Scale of environmental attitudes towards specific problems. Environment and attitudes are concepts that include many specific aspects. For their integrated assesment a scale of 50 items has been designed, combining each item an environmental variable with another specific attitudinal one. After its application to a sample of 1433 residents of Madrid a significant and equivalent explanatory capacity of both sets of variables has been confirmed, as well as the appropriate consistency of the scale and the subscales pollution and conservation. The underlying structure of the scale reveals the factors of individual concern, social concern, confidence and criterion. There are also distinctive clusters of the environmental problems depending on the attitudinal variables. Transport use emerges as a specially sensitive point in the selfimage of the citizens, as well as the social norm or importance granted to the social context of the individual in the formation of its own ecological awareness.
