Abstract

The history of the collections of geological materials (mainly minerals, fossils and rocks) in the University of Oviedo during the last 150 years is presented. Three main stages can be distinguished. The first is related with the “Gabinete de Historia Natural” (1846-1934), which was located in the historical building of the University. The second (1948-1995), initiated by Noel Llopis, is related with the creation and development of the geological studies in the University. The last stage began in 2001 with the opening of the Geological Museum, developed under the patronage of the Geology department of the University.
