Abstract

An analysis of the characteristics of the natural gas fields discovered in Asturias is presented. Natural gas is well known in this region in the coal mines, due to firedamp explosions, but it was also found during the borehole prospecting of coal basins located under the Mesozoic cover. Later on, gas was also found during off shore oil prospecting, and in projects that searched the collecting of methane contained in coal beds (C.M.R. projects). The boreholes drilled in the zone of the syncline of Sama on the C.M.R. project, have confirmed a notable methane gas potential in the upper coal bearing section of the Carboniferous; however, there remain to be completed induced fracture experiments. Other possible areas to perform these prospective programs are defined, such as the Carboniferous basins beneath the Perm-Mesozoic sediments situated north of the central Carboniferous basin.
