Abstract
In this work we present the major geological and geotechnical properties of PermoTriassic clays in Asturias, through a review of textural and mechanical laboratory tests. Low plasticity silts and clays are the more abundant types, but depending on their geographical location, they show significant compositional variations (sulfate content, organic matter…), which condition their measured properties. These sediments are inappropriate for shallow foundations due to their limited bear capacity and to their susceptibility to produce important consolidation settlements, existing also a punctual risk of soil expansivity. Finally, different types of slopes in these materials have been analyzed using computer software, in order to explain slope instabilities observed in several roads. We proposed the ideal geometry for those slopes, as well as the more suitable complementary systems of stabilization.
