Resumen
Resumen: Partiendo de una breve descripción del medio físico del bajo Duero y de los grandes itinerarios que lo atravesaron, así como de un también breve encuadre cronológico, se analiza el doblamiento y su organización en la época de la monarquía asturiana, basándose en testimonios documentales y materiales (villae y ecclesiae, vías terrestres y puertos fluviales, fortificaciones, cementerios y sepulturas, y testimonios de arte prerrománico). Visto el modo como las presuras y el modelo de organización basado en civitates sirvieron a la monarquía asturiana para integrar el valle del Duero en su área de influencia, no dejamos de hacer ver los cambios socioeconómicos y político-militares que tuvieron lugar a fines del milenio, que acabarían por implantar otro modelo, basado en las terras.

Abstract: After a short description of physical landscapes of lower Douro and its main routes, and having set out the chronological frame, the settlement pattern at the time of the Asturian kingdom is analyzed, taking out on both documentary and material sources (villae and ecclesiae, terrestrian routes, river havens, fortifications, graveyards, tombs, pre-romanesque remains). Having seen how the land taking and the settlement pattern based on the civitates served to the purposes of the Asturian monarchy to incorporate the Douro valley under its ruling sphere, it becomes evident the socio-economic and politicmilitary changes brought to light from the end of the first millennium A.D. These changes would drive the territorial organization into another settlement pattern, based on the terras.
