Abstract
From the Nineteenth century onwards, José de Cañizares (1676-1750) was regarded as a playwright from a period of darkness and decadence for Spanish theatre. In the last fifty years, those prejudices have been overcome, but his career as librettist and lyricist is less known than his facet of popular playwright. For that reason, this book has the objective of giving evidence about his importance as librettists for Hispanic music in the first half of the Eighteenth century. Furthermore, this research provides new information about his life.
