Furniture for the Offices of the Presidents of the Provincial Council. The Barcelona Provincial Council from 1886 and the Bizkaia Provincial Council from 1899

Abstract

In this paper we analyze the decoration of two institutional offices from the late nineteenth century: that of the President of the Barcelona Provincial Council, furnished by the firm F. Vidal y Compañía (1886–1887), and that of the President of the Bizkaia Provincial Council, created by the firm J. Ribas e hijos (1899–1900). Both are outstanding examples of historicist eclecticism applied to spaces of power. Francesc Vidal reinterpreted the German Renaissance using carved walnut and symbolic forms, such as the Roman armchair, an emblem of authority. José Ribas, on the other hand, adopted the Louis XIV style, introducing modernist details that reflect his engagement with Art Nouveau aesthetics. Although their projects differ, both reveal a desire for renewal within tradition and emphasize the representative function of such interiors, which bear witness to the dialogue between industry, art, and power in fin-de-siècle Spain.
