Abstract

This work is focused on the study of a serie of frames made by Juan Botas in his New Yorker study. The  collection  is  composed  of  almost  twenty  works,  nowadays  located  in Museo-Casa  Natal  de  Jovellanos.  Previously,  these  works  were  part  of  the exhibition named “Pásate por el estudio”, in the museum Nicanor Piñole in 1989.

These frames were made of foam, from a previous sketch, and then polychromed. Forms and colors are the  interesting  part  about  this.  Behind  this,  there  are  anentire  visual  theory  of  the  color  and  a  clearly  unique  aesthetic  that  had  been improved  over  the  time  by  the  asturian  artist.  Moreover,  all  of  these three-dimensional  works  are  one  of  the  examples  of  the  experimentation that  Botas had developed in the field of the visual theory. With these frames, there are other examples of three-dimensional creations that the artist had developed using the same  materials.  It  is  about  several  ornamental  elements  used  in  the same exhibition, although with different forms, but always using his own style.

Along this set of works we can find several influences and memories such as American pop art, of the pattern painting, of the New York School, of Neo-Pop. Furthermore, we can find the influence of leading figures inside the artistic field of postmodernity.
