Art and Industry in Asturias: An Approachto the Work of Luis Suco-Sánchez

Abstract

Art and industry have been closely related since the dawn of industrialization. In Asturias, since the eighteenth century and up to the present day, factory promotions have developed interesting artistic interventions in the work spaces and, in addition, have led to the emergence of new materials and iconographies in accordance with the new times. This essay offers an approach to the work of Luis Suco-Sánchez through four large format mosaics with industrial themes, made in the mid-twentieth century. All of these works are present in spaces linked to mining and iron and steel industry, such as the Pozo Fondón (Sama, Llangréu/Langreo) and the Escuela de Maestría Industrial (Avilés).
