Abstract

(1) The objective of this study is to create and validate a questionnaire that allows evaluating how students of Health Sciences at the University of Oviedo understand and describe psychological disorders. The reference criteria were the main explanatory models (contextual and medical/biomedical) of the mental disorders. It was also intended to know the beliefs about functionality in people with psychological disorders and their relationship with their understanding. (2) The sample consisted of 275 students of Psychology, Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy. The instrument was a 28-item ad hoc questionnaire. (3) The results of the factor analysis identified three factors. The Medical Model and the Contextual Model were independent of each other. The Medical Model was more related to the Functionality factor. Non-psychology students score significantly higher on the Medical Model. There were no differences in scores in the Contextual Model. (4) It is concluded that the questionnaire has been validated with a high ecological validity, that non-Psychology students of Health Sciences present beliefs more related to the medical/biomedical model; and that the contextual model or, failing that, the fundamental role of context is present in the same way in all disciplines. Finally, there is a relationship between the medical/biomedical model and more pessimistic beliefs regarding functionality.
