Abstract

Severe dementia is a public health problem that affects the functionality of the elderly in developed countries and their social environment. Among other characteristics, people with this disease have a symptomatological profile defined by the presence of behavioral agitation and a negative affective state (anxiety and depression). Traditionally, pharmacotherapy has been used to treat these symptoms. Nevertheless, its exclusive use has proven to generate numerous inconveniences in its users. Therefore, in recent years, the focus of attention has been placed on behavioral therapies such as multisensory stimulation and individual music therapy. The few existing studies have shown the efficacy of the separate application of both types of intervention. In addition, it has been suggested that their combined administration probably had a greater beneficial effect. However, studies are needed to specifically evaluate whether the joint application of these behavioral therapies can produce a greater improvement in symptoms of agitation, anxiety and depression in older people with severe dementia compared to their individual application.
