FOCUS AND SCOPE

Ería Revista Cuatrimestral de Geografía has sought to maintain, since its creation in 1980, the requirement and rigour of published works as well as a particular care of formal aspects, paying special attention to graphic representation.

It aims to serve as a periodic channel for the dissemination of research results in both academic and scientific fields. The name of the journal responds to this intention (in certain areas of Atlantic Spain the term 'ería' designated a set of farm lands, individually owned, but grouped under a collective fence).

Ería accepts texts written in Spanish, French or English.

In any case, the proposed works must be original. Studies under editorial commitment, accepted or under evaluation by another entity will not be accepted.

GOOD PRACTICES IN GENDER EQUALITY

Using the criteria of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), all our bodies, as well as the collaborating team of reviewers, are formed without taking into account the gender of their components in order to prevent any type of labour discrimination. We also pursue the use of inclusive and non-sexist language. We indicate the full names of the authors in all published works. Likewise, Ería requests that it be reported if the original data of research takes gender into account, in order to allow the identification of possible differences.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

The review process begins after verifying that the work conforms to the Authors guidelines, as well as the focus of the journal, and meets the fundamental requirements of scientific rigour. In case of not meeting any requirement, the authors are informed to correct it and make a new submission. If all are met, the work goes to the review phase.

In all sections (articles, notes, bibliographic reviews, notices and materials, presentations), the works are submitted to external evaluation (double blind peer review). The two reviewers will be specialists in the specific subject of the work to be evaluated and not linked to the authors. The review period can be extended up to 6 weeks. To make the report, the reviewers must cover a form. Besides, they can attach complementary files.

In case of delay, a notice is sent to the reviewer (reminding the established deadline). If the delay persists, the reviewer is deactivated and the task is requested from another.

The journal team guarantees the anonymity of the parties. At the end of the year, without identifying the evaluated works, the list of reviewers and their institutional affiliation is published

Once both evaluation reports are received, the content is transferred to the authors and the provisional editorial decision is issued:

-Accept submission: to be published without modifications.

-Revisions required: changes in the form and / or content are necessary to clarify, complete or rectify the work without actually restructuring or rethinking it. If they are undertaken properly, the submission can be accepted.

-Resubmit for review: restructuring and rethinking the work are requested. If it is properly rewritten according to the request, a new peer evaluation process will be advised.

-Decline submission: not publishable under any circumstances.

When one of the two reports declines the possibility of publishing the work, a third evaluation is requested.

When the provisional editorial decision is ‘revisions required’ or ‘resubmit for review’, authors have a variable term to make the requested modifications, depending on their depth. Both the modified work files and a text explaining the changes made should be incorporated into the Ería website.

From that moment on, a decision will be communicated again, either definitive ('accept submission' / 'decline submission'), or even provisional ('revisions required' / 'resubmit for review').

After accepting a submission, a post-evaluation is carried out to guarantee that the subsequent layout is made without typographical, linguistic or semiological errors.

During the editing process, the author is requested to:

-the proofreading, carried out according to the guidelines of the Open Journal System (OJS). Through the website, the editorial team will send a message with indications to review the work (already adapted to the journal's mock-up) so that the author read the set and make specific corrections (with variable term, depending on the mock-up, between 5 and 10 days). The corrections will be made with .pdf file editing tools or with .doc change control (depending on the format used). The revised file will be returned to the editorial team using the space enabled on the website itself.

-the elaboration of the English “short version”, subsequently reviewed by the editorial team (checking the correspondence with the Spanish version and introducing changes resulting from the proofreading).

PRE-PUBLICATION

When the editorial process is completed before the end of each four-month period (including the different formal and graphic treatments), the journal pre-publishes the works and assigns them DOI so that authorship is officially registered.

PERIODICITY

Ería publishes an issue every four months since 1987, after having been an annual journal in the period 1980-1982 and biannual between 1983 and 1986.

The numbering system changed in 2017, once the issue 100 was reached. From that moment, each issue is identified as follows: Volumen [year, followed by the cardinal that identifies the four-month period, in Arabic numerals]. Año [cardinal that identifies the antiquity of the journal, in Roman numerals].

Example, in 2017:

Volumen 2017-1. Año XXXVII

Volumen 2017-2. Año XXXVII

Volumen 2017-3. Año XXXVII

In order to facilitate automatic data extraction to bibliographic databases, an alternative system is also used: volume + cardinal number that indicates the number of years, followed by the number of the four -month period also in cardinal; next, current year in parentheses.

Example, in 2017:

Vol. 37 No. 1 (2017)

Vol. 37 No. 2 (2017)

Vol. 37 No. 3 (2017)

DISCLAIMER

The points of view, the opinions expressed and, as a whole, the contents of the published works are the sole responsibility of the authors, who must respond to any circumstance resulting from the application of the current legislation on intellectual property (the editorial team of Ería Revista Cuatrimestral de Geografía is exempt).

ETHICAL DECLARATION ON PUBLICATION AND REJECTION OF BAD PRACTICES

Ería Revista Cuatrimestral de Geografía uses the standard of ethical conduct and good practices in publications of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in order to guarantee a quality editorial practice. This code of behavior involves all parts of the process (authors, reviewers and editorial team), who must comply with the following principles:

Authors

-identification of authorship: all people who significantly contribute to the conception, design, development and presentation of the work must be recognized as co-authors and must approve the proposed version for evaluation and, where appropriate, for the final publication. Those who have not assumed a participation cannot be considered as authors. Other contributions and collaborations (advice, access to sources, financial support, etc.) will be mentioned in an acknowledgment section.

-originality: works must be original and not plagiarized. In case of partially using content and ideas by other authors, they must be cited.

-redundant publication: the submitted papers should not constitute already published research (in essence, form, frame of reference and conclusions) by the same authors in other journals.

-simultaneous evaluation: submitting the same work to evaluation in more than one journal simultaneously is considered unacceptable practice.

-quality standards for publication: texts must present evidence of the way in which the research has been carried out, state the aims pursued and justify their interest. The results must be presented clearly and the data must be exploited in a precise and rigorous way, without inaccuracies or fraudulent treatment of the information.

-indication of sources: the publications, documents and services of any kind that have inspired, oriented and / or enriched the development of the research must be pointed out, including those resulting from the private exchange of information (interview, correspondence, forum, etc.) - being necessary, in the latter case, the explicit and written permission of the interlocutors who serve as a source.

-risks resulting from research procedures: if certain practices or the use of tools involve significant risks, this circumstance must be indicated in the corresponding place in the manuscript.

-conflicts of interest: when submitting the work, conflicts of interest that could arise around the publication should be communicated.

-access to information and data retention: availability will be maintained during the evaluation process and, where appropriate, while the edition is being prepared, as well as after publication.

-errors in published works: authors must notify of any inaccuracies or relevant errors found in their own published work, as well as collaborate to correct or retract it. Likewise, the editor's observations will be taken into account if the editorial team identifies the error.

Reviewers

-scientific contribution: the blind peer review should be understood as an essential contribution to editorial decision-making and a basic factor for improving research.

-objectivity: the task has to be carried out in an objective, impartial and constructive way. Any observation must be based on scientific foundations.

-confidentiality: the review process should be conceived as a confidential procedure that cannot be shown or shared with third parties.

-availability: in case of not being able to meet the requested deadline or observe any impediment to undertake the review with the necessary rigor, the editor must be informed as soon as possible.

-incompatibility and / or conflict of interest: in case of observing any justified reason for not undertaking the task (competitive, collaborative relationship, etc. with the author or other agents related to the work), the editor must be informed.

-use of scientific content: the works in evaluation should not be used by reviewers for their own research without citing them. The evaluation cannot be conceived as an advantageous access to research results for the professional benefit of reviewers.

-identification of sources: reviewers should contribute to the identification of sources, ideas, information, etc. that have not been cited by the authors. They will also warn about notable coincidences between the work in evaluation and others already published.

Editorial team

-acceptance of papers for publication: the acceptance of a paper rests with the editor, who relies on the policies of the Editorial Board (based on the journal's approach, guidelines for authors, recommendations of the reviewers and recognition of the academic and scientific validity of the works, without other interests intervening).

-confidentiality: the identities of authors and reviewers or information about the works received are not revealed. An anonymous blind peer review process is guaranteed.

-objectivity: the works received are valued only for their contribution to knowledge, without giving importance to personal attributes or other professionals (ethnicity, gender, belief, ideology, institutional affiliation, etc.). To this end, specialists are selected with a commitment to objectivity.

-rejection of bad practices: procedures are used to detect bad practices in a systematic way (for example, plagiarism detection programs supplied by the University of Oviedo). The editorial team will act in accordance with current regulations on defamation, copyright infringement and plagiarism. They will take appropriate measures when receiving any sufficiently substantiated notification regarding misconduct. They may also request advice from the Editorial Board, qualified specialists or accredited bodies.

-use of scientific content: the works received should not be used by the team for their own research without the author's consent or reference to the work. The editorial task cannot be conceived as an advantageous access to research results for the professional benefit of the editorial team.

-conflicts of interest: the editorial team will require all members and collaborators to communicate possible conflicts of interest regarding the reception, evaluation or publication of works (due to competitive, collaborative or other connections with the authors and / or collaborating entities).

PROCEDURE FOR DETECTION OF PLAGIARISM

Once the publication proposal is received, the work is subjected to a procedure for the detection of plagiarism, supported by specific software provided by the University of Oviedo.

In case of detecting high coincidences in textual and / or graphic content with other works not cited, or cited but copied verbatim in an inappropriate extension, the authors are informed in detail about this circumstance.

In this case, the rectification will be required. If this does not occur, the Ería team will cancel the publication proposal.

USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

In a context of increasing use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) (or chatbots), mandatory standards are necessary in order to promote and preserve a rigorous, ethical and effective workspace. Based on a set of considerations from scientific organizations and editors' associations, the editorial team of Ería Revista Cuatrimestral de Geografía has developed a specific protocol:

For authors:

• Chatbots, or generative AI, cannot be authors or co-authors under any circumstances, nor can they be cited as a reference or other primary source.

• The use or publication of images created by AI is not acceptable.

• Any use of AI must be indicated. Additionally, the prompts or query statements used to convert text or generate it, the date of generation, as well as the specific chatbot that was used and its version must be declared. This will be done in communications with participants in the editorial process and also in the manuscript.

• Authors will be responsible for the information they include in their text coming from AI. Keep in mind that AI is trained with material already published by authors (which it may not cite, or use inappropriately or incorrectly). It is the responsibility of the authors to avoid plagiarism by mistake or use of information in this way. Likewise, authors will be responsible for the accuracy, integrity and validity of the generated text.

For editors and reviewers:

• Editors and reviewers will be provided with specialized tools (recommended by the institution) that allow them to detect the use of AI, as a complementary measure for the review of the text.

• Editors and reviewers must report when using AI in the editorial process. They must indicate how it was used. Likewise, they will be responsible for ensuring that any information generated by AI and incorporated in the reviews and editorial process is correct, complete and impartial.

• They will avoid incorporating manuscripts from Ería into software or other AI technologies in which confidentiality and security of treatment are not guaranteed.

• The use of AI for text correction may be admissible, as old proofreaders have been using.

INTEROPERABILITY PROTOCOL

Ería currently uses the Dublin Core scheme for its metadata tags. The interoperability protocol used is OAI-PMH 2.0.
