RESUMEN:
La casa señorial, el castillo, la mansión, o cualquier otro tipo de morada-fortaleza, simboliza en la literatura norteamericana de inspiración gótica un posible legado oscuro de antaño, cargado de un determinismo funesto por el que sus ocupantes estarían condenados a repetir los mismos errores que sus antepasados, o quizás a pagar de alguna manera por los pecados que aquellos cometieron. En términos generales, esta tenebrosa cualidad, bien sea en forma de herencia familiar o condicionamiento social, siempre ejerce una influencia negativa sobre los moradores de la estancia, pudiendo llevarlos a un deterioro espiritual o su propia destrucción física.

ABSTRACT: Manors, castles, mansions or any kind of fortified quarters symbolise in Gothic American literature a possible dark legacy of the past, burdened by a gloomy deterministic nature that forces its dwellers to invariably make the same mistakes as their ancestors, or pay for the wrongdoings these were responsible for, without exception. Generally speaking, this grim condition, whether it be inherited by means of family traits or somehow imposed by reasons of social status, bears a negative influence upon the heirs, descendents and any other residents within such architectural structures, leading them to the spiritual decay, or even physical destruction, of their beings.
