RESUMEN:
El nombre de la población y parroquia de Porrúa, en el concejo de Llanes, oriente de Asturias, es un ejemplo de topónimo opaco tanto para los hablantes como para los lingüistas: la palabra común que dio lugar al topónimo es desconocida, y su etimología es incierta. Existen una serie de hipótesis para explicar el origen de Porrúa, que atienden tanto a su parte léxica Porr- como al supuesto sufijo -úa. En este artículo repasamos las variantes del topónimo y las hipótesis sobre su origen, valorando cada una de ellas y haciendo algunas observaciones y sugerencias que puedan ayudar a dar luz en esta cuestión aún no aclarada del todo.

ABSTRACT:
The name of Porrúa, a village and parish of the municipality of Llanes, eastern Asturias, is an example of opaque toponym both for the speakers and for the linguists: the common word that generated the toponym is unknown, and its etymology is uncertain. There are several hypothesis to make clear Porrúa’s origin, that they attend to his lexical part Porr- and also to the supposed suffix -úa. In this article we revise the variants of the toponym and the hypotheses on his origin, valuing each of them and doing some observations and suggestions that could help to give light in this question still not clarified completely.
