Resume
El presente artículo analiza la imagen del Siglo de Oro proyectada por la prensa británica entre 1801 y 1823. Para ello, se abordan una veintena de artículos y reseñas publicados en ocho de las cabeceras más relevantes de la época y protagonizados por autores, obras o movimientos de la literatura áurea. En primer lugar, se sondean los dedicados al teatro, centrados –con raras excepciones– en Lope de Vega y Calderón de la Barca; se atiende después a la valoración de la prosa barroca, representada por Cervantes y la picaresca; y, finalmente, se examinan los juicios sobre las tendencias líricas españolas, críticos –en su mayoría– con las escuelas italianizante y gongorina. A partir de estos textos, se reflexiona sobre la conceptualización del Siglo de Oro por parte de los intelectuales del Reino Unido, quienes –en plena eclosión romántica– se debatían entre la creciente hispanofilia europea y la reafirmación de su propia hegemonía cultural.
