Abstract

This article explores the way in which Andrea Dunbar wrote her plays. Being so, apart from placing those plays in their sociocultural and artistic context, it is considered the way in which dramatic material is chosen, its nature and the styles applied in its treatment. Likewise, her three known plays are analyzed in the context of the British drama of the eighties, to single out their most unique aspects. The paper starts with review of relevant literature is and continues with an analysis and interpretation of her plays and other materials. As a conclusion, it highlights the pioneering nature of her plays in the emergence of current trends in drama, the way in which she turns writing into a strategy to (re)building the experience and the (re)construction of the self and identity, but also her indirect denunciation of gender and class oppression in an especially marginal and depressed social environment.
