Abstract
Silence, which is usually considered the antithesis of speech and a passive form of communication, is loaded with meanings, functions, and rhetoric. The objective of this paper is to make a brief investigation of silence in the light of some fundamental concepts of Cultural Rhetoric —metaphorical engine, interdiscursivity, polyacroasis, communicative kinesthesia and rhetoric in society—, focused on two specific aspects: silence in intercultural contexts and silence as a tool of social protest. The meaning and the perception of silence vary in cultures and groups with different communication styles and can cause confusion or misunderstandings, which is why greater intercultural competence in communicative kinesthesia is required. In the social dimension, against the silence imposed by the dominant power, especially in authoritarian regimes, silence is also used on many occasions as a form of resistance and protest.
