Abstract
In the present article, I suggest an analysis of Mónica Ojeda’s short story “El mundo de arriba y el mundo de abajo” in light of four key concepts: ‘Gothic,’ ‘monster,’ ‘body,’ and ‘ecophobia.’ I argue that Ojeda’s text follows a tradition of recontextualizing the Frankenstein myth in order to understand other portrayals of the creator and the creature. In the current case, the echoes of Frankenstein resonate in the Andean mountains and take the form of a pseudo-shaman and his undead daughter. Ojeda’s short story resuscitates a pre-colonial time and belief system, thereby illustrating the endurance and extensiveness of this archetype.
