Abstract
Leprosy is an important global health problem that, although it is extremely rare in Europe, is suffering an increase in its diagnosis of up to 10% of the total cases in the world and doubled in Spain with 10 new cases per year. Clinically it produces hypopigmented or reddish lesions that typically present a loss of sensation. Histopathological findings can be variable and lepromatous, borderline, and tuberculoid variants have been described. The biopsy will not always show a definitive or compatible histopathological image, so diagnostic clinical suspicion is, ultimately, the best tool. For its confirmation, the determination of Mycobacterium leprae DNA can be carried out on paraffined material or samples preserved in alcohol.
