PROFESSOR ESTEBAN VARELA MATEOS. PROFESSOR OF ROMAN LAW AT THE UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE MADRID

We regret to inform you of the death of Professor Esteban Varela Mateos, Professor of Roman Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, who was not only a great teacher and a great collaborator in the Iberoamerican Association of Roman Law, but also a magnificent person.

Born in Vallisoletano, Casasola de Arión, he was born on 24 February 1942. In June 1972 he graduated in Law at the University of Salamanca. In July 1976 he obtained the degree of Doctor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with a doctoral thesis directed by the Professor of Roman Law, D. Pablo Fuenteseca Díaz, entitled, De contutoribus, with which he obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude.

He developed his academic life at the University of Zaragoza, where he obtained the Chair of Roman Law by competitive entrance examination in March 1984 and from May 1989 by competitive examination he obtained the Chair of Roman Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he remained until his retirement in 2012.

 He was a member of scientific committees of several specialised journals, including Ius Fugit.  (Journal of Historical and Legal Studies of the Crown of Aragon) and Anales de Derecho (Journal of the Faculty of Law of the University of Murcia).  Co-organiser of meetings and congresses on Roman Law, including those held in Spain, Portugal and Argentina by the Ibero-American Association of Roman Law.

He held the position of Honorary Trustee of the Dintel Foundation and was a founding member of the Ibero-American Association of Roman Law, actively participating in all its activities.   May he rest in peace.
