INCLUSIVE AND NON-SEXIST LANGUAGE

The journal Lletres Asturianes expresses its commitment to gender policies aimed at achieving substantive equality between women and men in society. In line with this commitment, Lletres Asturianes adopts the following guidelines:

Authors are strongly encouraged to use inclusive and non-sexist language in manuscripts submitted for publication, thereby promoting gender equality in the scientific domain. This recommendation aligns with the objectives set out in the European Research Area (ERA) Agenda for the 2022–2024 period, specifically its Action 5: "Promote gender equality and foster inclusion."

In this regard, authors are invited to consult and apply the guidelines outlined in the Practical Guide to Inclusive and Gender-Sensitive Language produced by the University of Oviedo.

Additionally, Lletres Asturianes strives to ensure a balanced representation of women and men within its Editorial Board and among the pool of peer reviewers involved in manuscript evaluation.

Authors will be required to provide explicit information as to whether sex was considered during the collection and analysis of research data. This requirement aims to facilitate the identification of any relevant differences. Furthermore, the full names of all authors must be included in published works.

The journal acknowledges the diversity inherent in academic writing and the variability in the applicability of certain linguistic adaptations aimed at promoting equality. It is also understood that promoting equality goes beyond purely morphological aspects of language. Nevertheless, it is assumed that the Asturian language has sufficient resources and mechanisms to express ideas in an inclusive and non-sexist manner, allowing authors to choose forms of expression that contribute to social change.

For further information on this subject, we recommend consulting the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines on inclusive writing, available at: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/bias-free-language.

From the perspective of this journal, the investment of initial effort in the preparation of inclusive article texts is considered to lead to meaningful progress for society as a whole. Scientific communication cannot remain detached from the social transformations that shape and support it.
