How to Cite
Abstract
In this article, we claim the depth of Tacitus'; legal knowledge in order to highlight his work as a source for the study of Roman Law. Specifically, we analyze Tacitus; fidelity to the primary sources of Roman Law, through a comparative analysis between the epigraphically preserved laws (the Tabulae) and the mentions of these laws that we find in the Annals by our author.
The conclusion is that Tacitus knew the legal texts, and used them as primary sources for his historical work, but he summarized, selected, and adapted them for use for historiographical and political purposes. In summary, we can affirm that Tacitus' mentions of legal topics can be considered as secondary sources for the knowledge of Roman law.
