Introduction:

The development of inclusive education began with the Salamanca Declaration. This year marks the 30th anniversary of its proclamation, and it currently stands as a central objective on the political agenda of all countries. The interpretation of the concept of inclusion, as well as its development, has been uneven in different countries. Consequently, the way of addressing this right varies significantly among countries, districts, and even between schools and communities.

The concept of inclusion is diffuse and versatile, and likewise, the diversity of students constitutes a holistic term—an ambiguous and complex notion subject to numerous definitions. This monograph aims to provide a perspective on the presence, participation, and learning of individuals in different aspects of school and social life from a broader standpoint that extends beyond the school environment. To achieve this, we focus on current lines of research, as well as methodological and action proposals addressing other variables such as community and social inclusion, inclusive methodologies, teacher and other educational professionals' training, and proposals that promote and approach inclusivity through the creation of networks and support/leadership.

Inclusive education requires new visions, perspectives, grammars, and professional roles. These should promote an inclusive, equitable, and quality educational response in multiple contexts, with a focus on transforming practices that move us away from the horizon of inclusion and equity. Only in this way, will we advance and make inclusive education a sustainable reality in the 21st century.
