Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance, just as many others have found a positive relationship between empowerment and student performance. Yet, few studies have examined the reciprocal influence between both variables of empowerment and emotional intelligence, an aspect that may be of interest as they are closely related constructs that largely determine the effectiveness of teaching-learning processes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is an influence between empowerment and emotional intelligence in a sample of university students and to analyze if this influence works through any of the factors that make up this second variable. The results show that empowerment not only directly influences the level of emotional intelligence, but also indirectly through emotional factors. These findings contribute to improve the design of socio-educational intervention programs aimed at the development of both competences.
