Abstract
The development of students’ digital competences in primary education classrooms, with the aim of preparing students to make informed decisions in today's digital society, saturated with hegemonic discourses, must necessarily involve the development and application of critical thinking. To demonstrate its importance, the research presented here seeks to analyse primary school students’ ability to address the controversial issue of chocolate through their own narratives. The study was conducted with a sample of 1,765 students from schools across Spain, covering all three cycles of primary education, and focuses on analysing the final activity of a previously implemented questionnaire. In this task, students created stories through drawings and written texts to share with their peers on the topic studied, which would later be presented as a YouTube video. The evaluation results, obtained using an adaptation of the DigiCompEdu framework, reveal that, in general, students tend to reproduce hegemonic discourses, displaying a very low level of critical literacy.
